Matt Galas is the Vice President of Windy City Curling and a founding member. He is about to take his curling game to the next level, joining a competitive team that plays on the World Curling Tour. Starting with the St. Paul Cash Spiel this coming weekend, Matt will be playing lead for Team Bret Jackson. Before he left for St. Paul, I caught up with Matt for an interview.
Most competitive curlers got into the game in childhood, or their teens at the ...
The Law Enforcement Torch Run Plane Pull is a charity event that benefits Special Olympics Illinois. Teams of 20 compete to see who can move a 99-ton Airbus A300 12 feet in the shortest amount of time. Essentially, it is like playing tug-of-war with a massive airplane. I have been involved with this event since 2010, and this year I am proud to say that Windy City Curling is fielding a team. To get a better idea of what this event ...
Windy City Curling recently moved from Rocket Ice Arena in Bolingbrook to Seven Bridges Ice Arena in nearby Woodridge. In order to celebrate the move (and to give the ice a whirl) we hosted an open house for the public last Saturday.
To start things off, some ceremonial "first stones" were thrown.
After that, some members played pick-up games, while others helped teach the game to first-timers...including several members of the Seven Bridges staff.
A big thank-you to Seven Bridges for ...
We held our first annual spring banquet last Saturday, and the event was a big success! Members, family, and friends joined together for drinks, food, and fun as we celebrated our first year together as a club.
Our event was held at Taphouse Grill in Westmont. Some members arrived early to watch the Kentucky Derby, many cheering on Keen Ice...son of Curlin' no less! How can you not like a horse with a name and a pedigree like that? Anyway, after the ...
Last Thursday, April 30th, Team Galas secured their spot as Windy City's representative to the 2015 Arena National Championships. This year's event will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from July 16-19. A newer event, Arena Nationals is open to teams from clubs (such as Windy City) that do not play on dedicated ice. Curling is growing in the US, and most of this growth is coming from arena clubs. As such, Arena Nationals is growing as well, with this year's ...
After the semi-finals, I was positively buzzing. I couldn't have asked for a better result...my two favorite rinks were set to face off in the women's final. No matter who won, the result would make me happy. Of course, it also dawned on me at this time that one of my favorite teams was also about to lose. To say I was torn would be an understatement.
In my heart, I wanted Sidorova to win. They were underdogs the whole week, and ...
Today was the last day of the Players' Championship. The morning draw featured the men's and women's semi-final matches: Team Jacobs vs Team Bottcher/Middaugh, Team McEwen vs Team Epping, Team Sidorova vs Team Sweeting, and Team Muirhead vs Team Homan.
We got to the arena area early, in case there wasn't much parking. Luckily the lot was empty and we grabbed breakfast nearby. I was beyond nervous, as I was so close to getting to see my two favorite curling rinks face ...
Once again we were up early to get over to the arena. Team Sidorova had to play Team Middaugh in a tiebreaker for the 6th and final playoff spot. The draw was free, and almost completely empty. We decided to sit right behind their sheet and cheer them on from up close.
I took a lot of pics, being that close to the action with little blocking our view.
Team Sweeting and Team Homan showed up, taking in a little bit of the ...
Seems like just yesterday that everyone met at Windy City for the first week of curling. April 3, 2014.
And although everyone has their memorable points from the past year, I just wanted to highlight a few of mine.
TEAM JEFF GALAS WINS THE FIRST LEAGUE
Despite personally throwing many stones through the house to actually getting stones in play, our team was able to take the first league championship.
Although I personally spent most of the summer at work and had to miss a ...
